Abstract

Incorporation of dietary fiber as a part of a healthy diet is increasingly being emphasized by healthcare professionals. Health claims on dietary fiber and disease prevention are warranted based on the growing positive scientific evidence of a beneficial role for fiber. The purpose of this paper is to provide a critical review of the evidence behind existing and potential health claims surrounding fiber as a functional food. It is concluded that claims relating to cardiovascular health and constipation are well founded. Despite the need for further research in the area of colorectal cancer and diverticulosis, preventive claims relating the risks of low fiber consumption to disease development are justified by solid scientific evidence.
